How to Burn a Candle Properly

Burning a candle may seem simple, but small habits can make a meaningful difference in how it performs—and how long it lasts.

Proper care ensures a clean, even burn and helps preserve the atmosphere a candle is meant to create.

Trim the Wick Before Each Burn

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch.

This helps:

  • prevent excess smoke

  • reduce soot buildup

  • maintain a steady, controlled flame

A shorter wick supports a cleaner burn and a calmer experience.

Allow the Wax to Melt Fully

On the first burn especially, allow the wax to melt across the entire surface of the candle.

This creates an even wax pool and helps prevent tunneling, which can shorten the life of your candle over time.

Patience here makes a difference later.

Burn for Thoughtful Intervals

We recommend burning candles for no more than four hours at a time.

Shorter, intentional burns help maintain wax integrity and keep the fragrance experience balanced within a space.

Choose a Stable Surface

Always place your candle on a heat-resistant, stable surface away from drafts, flammable materials, children, and pets.

A steady environment supports both safety and performance.

Know When to Stop

Discontinue use when approximately ½ inch of wax remains.

This helps protect the vessel and ensures safe use through the life of the candle.

A Quiet Ritual

Candle care isn’t about rules—it’s about intention.

When treated thoughtfully, a candle becomes more than an object. It becomes part of a rhythm: lighting, pausing, and letting a space settle.
